Set in 1930’s America and based on a comic book hero Rocketeer tells the story of a young stunt pilot Cliff Secord (Bill Campbell) who finds an experimental rocket pack that’s been dumped by gangsters during a pursuit by the FBI. With his partner "Peevy" Peabody Secord gets the rocket pack working allowing him to fly through the air. He is forced to use the rocket to pull off a daring mid-air rescue during an air display becoming known as the “Rocketeer” but tipping off the gangsters and the FBI that he has the pack.
Intertwined with these events is Secord’s girlfriend and budding film star, Jenny Blake. While visiting Jenny on set they are overhead discussing the Rocket Pack by number three box office star, Neville Sinclair (Timothy Dalton). Sinclair isn’t what he seems and is in fact himself involved in the search for the pack. Jenny gets kidnapped by Sinclair and Secord sets out to rescue her culminating in an enjoyable climax involving FBI agents, gangsters, Nazis and a full blown Zeppelin.
Rocketeer makes for a thoroughly enjoyable action story that the kids will love. There are plenty of exciting moments – car chases, air races, gun fights, gangsters, nazis, Zeppelins, etc. but it never quite loses its 1930’s “B” movie feel which is sad as there is no real reason why it shouldn’t be up there with the likes of Indiana Jones, etc.
